When we are out and about sourcing new brands and trend spotting, it is easy to be caught up with all things healthy and calorie friendly.

But it’s always been the case that alongside our growing health obsession, we still harbor our love of all things fried and crispy.

On a recent trip to Hong Kong we discovered a mecca to all things golden and crunchy. Tonkichi Tonkatsu is one of Hong Kong’s favourite spots when it comes to tonkatsu, a Japanese dish of pork cutlets (or Prawns) that are breaded and deep fried to a golden brown.

This simple award-winning restaurant is located in the World trade Center and well known by locals for its Japanese fried foods and generous portions.

Tonkichi is the model of modern dining, delivering a focused menu and high quality food, while going considerably easier on the wallet.

The menu immediately gets the juices flowing, offering a range of small dishes and seafood, but the real draw here is the authentic tonkatsu.

We tucked into the large fried king prawns, freshly imported from Malaysia. They’re big and meaty, and are perfectly complemented with thinly cut Japanese cabbage infused with grapefruit and sesame seeds.
I personally love the sesame grinding experience. It was fun and the sesame seeds smelled fabulous.
Once you’ve placed your orders, you receive your own mortar and pestle, so you can do a little stress relief while you chat. Then you can mix the coarsely grinded sesame with the sauce provided on the table, to create the dressing for your own specific taste.

As concepts go, this one definitely ‘has legs’ …….as we like to say in the trade. So don’t be surprised to see one in London sometime soon. Move over fish & chips ……………… hello crispy breadcrumbs.
